Annual Crop of Hope

Each year we join together in our crafty goodness and hold a Crop of HOPE. We select a charity to work with to make a difference in the struggles they face, the battle before them and hope they hold in their hearts for so many.

Many of us have had our lives effected by devastating circumstances that have left us with life long scars and loss. The Crop of HOPE is our day to remember that together we can make a difference. Not only in our lives but others needing a little hope in their lives as well.

Our own Slick Scissor Sisters, our crafty group members, are a group of powerful women who are changing the world for the better every single day. Individually we are supporting our communities, our country and the world with our personal efforts to be part of the hope that sustains us all. Each May we come together and dedicate our efforts on a selected charity. At our May All Day Crop event we host an auction, have raffles, crafting competitions, special project kits, games and so much more all with the hopes of raising as much money as we can to donate to our special selected charity.

This year our selected charity is Operation Smile. I have learned so much about this charity since joining the Close to my Heart company. CTMH has partnered with Operation Smile for years to make a difference in the lives of children and adults. Without the dedicated efforts of the doctors, nurses, medical personnel, administrative support and emotional support staff who volunteer countless hours of their time to travel near and far all to help others, these miracles would not be possible. Operation Smile is not just changing lives they are in some cases performing life saving or life longevity procedures.

I believe every child deserves the very best in life and their future should be open to a world of possibility! Together we can make that happen. I hope you will join us this year for this wonderful cause.

A little bit about how it all began: Operation Smile was founded in 1982 when Dr. William (Bill) P. Magee, Jr., a plastic surgeon, and his wife, Kathleen (Kathy), a nurse and clinical social worker, traveled to the Philippines with a group of medical volunteers to repair children’s cleft lips and cleft palates.

What they found was overwhelming. “People pushed their babies at us.” recalls Kathy. “They tugged at our sleeves with tears in their eyes and begged us to help their children.” In Naga City, approximately 300 families arrived hoping their children would receive surgery, but the team could only treat 40 children. As they prepared to leave, the Magees made a promise they would return to help more children.

They began soliciting donations of surgical equipment and supplies from manufacturers, threw themselves into grassroots fundraising and assembled a volunteer team of 18 doctors, nurses and technicians for their own medical mission to the Philippines.  They helped approximately 100 more patients, but again, hundreds still waited.

They saw the need and Operation Smile was born.

I hope that you will join us this year as we do our very best to raise money in the hopes of ending Multiple Sclerosis. Multiple Sclerosis effects the central nervous system and has a wide range of symptoms impacting the quality of life for those who fight this devastating disease. About 200 new cases are diagnosed each week in the United States. Please click on the link below for additional information.
